ABOUT CULTGA

CULTGA is a name formed from CULT and GA (雅) — a Japanese concept of beauty, refinement, and aesthetic sensibility.

Here, CULT refers not to any particular religion, sect, or ideology, but to the cultures, objects, and expressions that exist at the edges of the mainstream — things that inspire intense fascination, devotion, and obsession among those drawn to them.

Ghosts and the supernatural. Folk belief and ritual. Occult practices. Psychedelia. Outsider and underground culture.

What may be dismissed as strange, marginal, or unconventional can possess a visual language and beauty entirely its own. CULTGA looks for that beauty — the GA within the cult.

We collect, research, document, and preserve material that exists between established categories: orthodoxy and heresy, art and popular culture, the sacred and the profane, the everyday world and the otherworldly.

CULTGA is an archive and shop dedicated to these boundaries — and to carrying the culture found there into the future.
